1901 census... Aged 3, he was living at High Street,Lakenheath with his father- Alfred RUTTERFORD [31] a woodman/labourer; mother- Elizabeth (née MATTHEWS ?) [32]; sister- Dorothy C [2]; sister- Emily V [4 months]. All were born in Lakenheath. 1911 census...Aged 13, farm labourer, living at High Street,Lakenheath with his parents, sister Dorthy E and Emily V and new siblings; sister Alice B [8]; brothers William J [7] and Harold A [5] and sister Mollie B [3], all Lakenheath born. One sibling had died |

He enlisted Lakenheath War Diary:- LE CATELET - 8th - Order of march en route to Tape line "D","A", "B", "C", H.Q. -going difficult, progress slow. At 01:30 then the head of "D" Coy was about B.2.d.7.8. enemy put down a counter barrage along his front. The leading Coy was caught in the barrage and the column was halted and lay down, the barrage varied in intensity but did not stop until 03:30. Battalion formed up on the tape at 04:40. Zero 05:10 Barrage opened, attacking Coys closing up to it as arranged. 06:00 advance reached La SABONIERE and continued to HAMAGE FARM where a slight check occurred owing to enemy M.G. fire, there were enfiladed by pushing LG (Lewis Guns) up and the arrival of tanks at 07:05 completed the cleaning up. At about 07:30 the trenches in T.24.a.1.8.and as far as T.18.d.6.4. were in possession of the battalion. 12:45 Orders issued to continue attack on GREEN LINE, Bn HQ and reserve Coy arrived forward to enemy trenches T.18.d. 13:00 Attack well under way. 16:00 OC "B" Coy reported that strong point W of LAMPE FARM established and "A", "B" and "D" Coy re-organised in depth. |
